FIRST and FOREMOST this Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on our many blessings and to thank the Lord above for our salvation and daily provisions.
For me, the second most important aspect of this holiday is to enjoy the few moments together as a family as we have all somewhat gone our separate ways over the years. And, with what we have been shown through recent events at the University of Arkansas with the tragic loss of a player, now is a time to cherish your loved ones.
Finally… the 3rd biggest part of this coming weekend is of course… Football. Yes, NFL is great and all, but I find myself a college fan. This weekend has just as much potential as the last to stir up the BCS and really throw a wrench into what the country expects in the world of college football.
Should be exciting!! WPS & GO HOGS!!
the University of Arkansas Razorbacks are THE team to root for. It’s a state-wide phenomenon, largely because they’re the only noteworthy team in the entire state. I mention this only because there’s an international student here from the Czech Republic, and he’s gotten REALLY into the Razorbacks. I just think it’s funny/interesting that he dove into the culture head first, and yells WOO PIG SOOIE right along with the rest of them.

Hmmm…
Arkansas is no. 6 in the country. They lost to Alabama at their place but have been strong the remainder of the season.
But i’m still not sure how Oklahoma is ranked above them… They lost at home to an unranked Texas Tech… (Arkansas lost at Alabama to a team that has remained in the top 10 for virtually the last 3 years).
Oregon… ok, they lost to an undefeated LSU, but their only significant win (yes, a good one) was against Stanford. Who else have they beaten?? And what if Arkansas goes down to LSU and wins??
A 3 way tie in the SEC… who goes to the SEC championship? Who from the SEC goes to the national championship (assuming they win the SEC championship first)?
That’s werein lies the problem I have with the BCS…. Its set up in a way that could most definitely leave the most deserving team in the nation out of the championship and, in this situation, a very deserving team out of a BCS bowl.
Not saying that the Razorbacks will for sure win in Baton Rouge or that they deserve a national title bid. But I predict that if Arkansas and Alabama win out, there will be 3 SEC teams in the top 5.
One goes to the title game, another to a prestigeous BCS bowl and the other… shafted by a flawed system. Thus another reason for a PLAYOFF!
So with 3 weeks left in the regular season of college football and only 3 teams left undefeated (from the BCS conferences) is there a possibility that a team that goes undefeated this year could miss out on a BCS national championship?
I think yes! Here’s how….
LSU, OK State, and Stanford are the last 3 undefeated teams left in the BCS conferences AND each of these teams still has a Top 10 team left on their schedule.
Yes, I know that while it is unlikely that all 3 of these teams will lose in the final weeks, it is still not impossible. So, hypothetically speaking of course, if Boise and Houston were the only two undefeated teams at the end of the season, I’m not sure that either one would get into the BCS title game. Houston is the obvious one - they’d have to jump 9 spots in the BCS (I don’t season this happening), but what about Boise?
Unfortunately for Boise, I think they would once again get pushed back by the system to be next in line to a couple of one loss teams (mainly because of strength of schedule). They are a solid team but I’m not sure I’d put my money on them getting in even if they were the only undefeated team.
As of now there are 9 teams in the BCS Top 25 with only one loss and let’s say that LSU, OK State and Stanford all have one loss at the end of the season. That just leaves one question….
Who’s going to the Big Dance????
Interesting…. if things were to turn out like this would it provide a bigger push for a playoff system?

Jerico Nelson came to play against South Carolina.

AFTER LAST WEEKEND
ACC———————————Top 25 (3)————-Top 10 (N/A)
Big East—————————Top 25 (1)————-Top 10 (N/A)
Big 10——————————Top 25 (5)————-Top 10 (1)

PAC 12 —————————Top 25 (3)————-Top 10 (2)
SEC ——-————————-Top 25 (6)————-Top 10 (4)*
Non AQ—————————-Top 25 (3)————-Top 10 (1)
Before this last weekend the Top 25 in the BCS appeared to be the most evenly divided among the AQ conferences than I’ve seen in a long time (the Top 10 was made up of teams from 5 different conferences)…. But after this last weekend, the polls slide to more heavily favor a handful of conferences with the others having a few teams hanging in there. 15 of the teams in the Top 25 this week come from just 3 different conferences and 4 (nearly half!) of the Top 10 are from the SEC.
While I am biased towards the SEC, I can’t help but point out that as the season has gone on, we have seen a handful of teams/conferences emerge as consistent top tier programs.
What’s your opinion? Is this weeks poll an accurate look into the true power houses in college football? What must the ACC and the Big East do to challenge other conferences for dominance in college football?
And yes… he did strike me out twice in one game when he was a sophomore in high school. I’m a little more okay with it now than I was back then
If you’re a gambler… you may wanna put your money on Arkansas this weekend.
